Acrylic
Acrylics are pigment suspended in a polymer binder which can be dissolved in water before they dry. After the surface of the paint has begun to congeal, the areas which are dry to the touch are permanent and can no longer be dissolved.

Tempera
Egg yolk creates the binder for this type of painting. The yolk of the egg contains albumen; a substance which when applied to a surface creates a strong permanent transparent layer.

Watercolor
Paint is made from pigment and a binder. The pigment is the color: burnt sienna, cobalt blue, etc. The binder is the element that holds the pigment to the surface. In the case of watercolors, it is Gum Arabic. Gum Arabic is a gum from the larch tree.
