Socrates Atelier

What is virtue? What is good? What is justice? What is courage? What is moderation? What is piety? Socrates thought that understanding the perspectives of others on these six great questions would help him become a more excellent human being.

We will select one of these topics and discuss the issues during a class. You will then have the task to construct a sculpture which visually clarifies your view on the subject.

We will be working with paper, cardboard, and metal for this unit. You will be using the art studio to construct the maquette of paper or cardboard. From here we will switch to the metal atelier to layout your pieces on sheet steel and plasma cut out the designs. You will be introduced to MIG welding and you will be able to weld your sculpture together. Finishing will be done back in the art studio.

References for your assignment follow. Take time to review these periodically to keep focused and on track. Good luck.
